GAIA Webinar: Scaling Earth Observation Services: Insights from Europe and Africa on Adoption and Impact

On 4 June 2026, the Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC), within the framework of the GAIA project, hosted the webinar “Scaling Earth Observation Services: European and African Perspectives on Adoption and Impact”. The event brought together experts, researchers, and innovators to discuss one of the most pressing challenges facing Earth Observation (EO) initiatives today: how to transform promising technological developments into operational services that deliver long-term societal and economic impact.


The webinar provided a platform for projects working across different application domains to exchange experiences, share lessons learned, and explore strategies for increasing the adoption and scalability of EO-based solutions. By bringing together perspectives from both Europe and Africa, the event highlighted the growing importance of international collaboration in unlocking the full potential of Earth Observation technologies.




A key highlight of the session was the keynote presentation delivered by Prof. Glen Nwaila, from the GAIA project who shared valuable insights into the use of integrated remote sensing intelligence for understanding mineral systems and monitoring environmental change. His presentation demonstrated how advanced EO data and analytical techniques can support more informed decision-making in resource management while contributing to environmental sustainability.


The webinar also featured presentations from several innovative projects demonstrating how Earth Observation technologies are being applied to address real-world challenges. SWIM, presented by Fabian Suarez (e.Ray Europa), showcased EO-based solutions that support more efficient and sustainable water management. SNOWCOP, presented by Carlo Marin (Institute for Earth Observation), highlighted advanced monitoring approaches for the cryosphere, improving the understanding of snow and ice dynamics in a changing climate. KijaniSpace, presented by Dr. Corentin Dupont (Innotec21), demonstrated how Earth Observation and digital technologies can support climate-smart agriculture and enhance resilience in farming systems. OVERWATCH, presented by Vanina Fissore (ITHACA), illustrated the use of EO data and geospatial intelligence to strengthen crisis management and emergency response capabilities.


Despite addressing different sectors and user communities, the projects shared many common experiences regarding the path from innovation to operational deployment. During the moderated discussion, speakers and participants explored key topics including user engagement, operational adoption, scalability, value proposition, and opportunities for collaboration across sectors and geographical regions.


A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the importance of building trust among end users. Speakers highlighted that technological excellence alone is not sufficient to ensure adoption. EO services must be integrated into existing operational workflows, respond to clearly identified user needs, and demonstrate tangible benefits that stakeholders can readily understand and apply. The conversation also underscored the need for continuous engagement with users throughout the development process to ensure solutions remain relevant and sustainable beyond the lifetime of individual projects.


The webinar demonstrated the value of bringing together initiatives from different domains and regions to exchange knowledge and identify shared challenges. While the projects presented addressed topics ranging from water resources and climate resilience to environmental monitoring and emergency response, they all face similar questions about how to scale their services and maximise their long-term impact.
