Monitoring, Predicting, Restoring: Join the GAIA-TSF Stakeholder Workshop on 23 October 2026
The GAIA-TSF project invites mining industry professionals, public authorities, researchers and other stakeholders to an online workshop on 23 October 2026, from 13:30 to 15:30 CEST, to discover the latest developments of its innovative geospatial Artificial Intelligence prototype for Tailings Storage Facility monitoring.
đ Date:Â Friday, 23 October 2026 đ Time:Â 13:30â15:30 CEST đ» Format:Â Online â Microsoft Teams đïž Mandatory Registration

Ensuring the safety and environmental sustainability of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) remains a major challenge for the mining industry. Effective monitoring requires the integration of multiple sources of information to identify potential risks, understand environmental changes and support timely operational decisions.
The European Union-funded GAIA-TSF (Geospatial Artificial Intelligence Analysis for Tailings Storage Facilities)Â project is addressing these challenges through the development of an innovative prototype combining satellite Earth Observation (SatEO), in-situ measurements, geoscientific information and Machine Learning/Deep Learning (ML/DL).
The workshop will provide an opportunity to present the current development status, architecture and available technical outputs of the GAIA-TSF prototype.
Beyond the technological demonstration, the event aims to bring together representatives from the mining industry, public authorities, research organisations and technical communities to discuss how satellite- and AI-based monitoring solutions can respond to practical operational requirements.
Participants will also be invited to provide feedback through an interactive survey and moderated discussion, addressing the usability, potential applications, technical challenges and future development priorities of the prototype
Workshop Programme and Speakers
The two-hour workshop will combine technical presentations, stakeholder feedback and a round-table discussion on the future of sustainable tailings management.
13:30 â Welcome and introduction
Dr. Laura Quijano, from the Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC), GAIA-TSF project coordinator, will open the workshop and introduce its objectives.
13:40 â GAIA-TSF Prototype: Introduction and Developments
Dr. Mwansa Chabala (Copperbelt University) and Dr. Ing. LukĂĄĆĄ BrodskĂœ (Charles University) will present the GAIA-TSF prototype, including its architecture, technical developments and current outputs.
14:20 â Interactive Stakeholder Survey
Mr. Diego Lozano (ISMC) will lead an interactive survey to collect participants' perspectives on the relevance, usability and potential applications of the prototype.
14:30 â Coffee Break
14:45 â Round Table: From Scientific Research to Sustainable Mining Operations
The round table will bring together different scientific and operational perspectives:
Dr. Ivan Lizaga (IPE-CSIC):Â Sediment Dynamics â Showcase in the African Great Lakes Region.
Dr. RamĂłn SĂĄnchez Donoso (UCM):Â Sustainable Tailings Management.
Ms. Glenda Kasonde (Mopani Mining, participation to be confirmed):Â Mining Infrastructure Development â Mopani Mine.
15:20 â Panel Discussion: Monitoring, Predicting, Restoring â The Next Generation of Tailings Management
Speakers will discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating advanced monitoring and predictive technologies into sustainable mining practices.
The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Laura Quijano (ISMC).
15:30 â Wrap-up and Conclusions
Join the Discussion
The workshop will provide an opportunity to exchange perspectives on the practical applications of satellite Earth Observation and Artificial Intelligence for tailings monitoring and to contribute to the future development of the GAIA-TSF prototype.
We welcome the participation of mining professionals, public authorities, researchers, technology developers and all stakeholders interested in advancing safer and more sustainable tailings management.
