The GAIA-TSF project was prominently featured at EU Raw Materials Week 2025, thanks to the participation of the Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC) in the Smart Mining Futures side-event. As one of the EU’s key annual forums on raw materials policy, innovation, and sustainability, Raw Materials Week offers a strategic platform for GAIA-TSF to share its technological advances with leading stakeholders from across Europe.

A Key Event for Europe’s Raw Materials Ecosystem

Organised by the European Commission, Raw Materials Week 2025 takes place from 18 to 20 November, bringing together representatives from EU institutions, industry, academia, governments, and civil society. The event focuses on the sustainable and secure supply of raw materials—an essential pillar of Europe’s green and digital transitions.

This edition places particular emphasis on:

  • The implementation progress of the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA)

  • The development of strategic projects to strengthen EU supply chains

  • Increasing investment in sustainable raw materials solutions

  • Enhancing circularity and building resilient, diversified value chains

The week-long programme provides a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge, explore policy developments, and showcase technological innovations shaping the future of raw materials in Europe.

ISMC Showcases GAIA-TSF: Earth Observation for Safer Tailings Management

During the Smart Mining Futures side-event, Diego Lozano Osa represented ISMC and presented GAIA-TSF’s innovative approach to tailings storage facility monitoring, powered by Earth Observation (EO) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies.

His intervention highlighted how GAIA-TSF is developing advanced EO-based methodologies to improve the safety, sustainability, and transparency of tailings management. These tools enable:

  • Continuous and reliable monitoring of tailings structures

  • Early detection of potential geotechnical or environmental risks

  • Data-driven insights to support operators and decision-makers

  • Alignment with EU policies promoting responsible and safe mining practices

Such innovations are essential to modernising Europe’s raw materials sector and contribute directly to CRMA objectives on risk mitigation and sustainable domestic production.

Synergies With Sister Projects Strengthen Impact

The session gathered a wide range of EU-funded projects working at the intersection of smart mining, digital technologies, and sustainable raw materials management. Participating initiatives included:

  • AGEMERA EU Project

  • MOSMIN

  • OPTIMINER EU Project

  • GoldenRAM

  • MineyeProject

  • DINAMINE

  • DeepBEAT

This collaborative setting allowed GAIA-TSF to explore synergies, identify opportunities for joint activities, and contribute to the development of a shared exploitation roadmap that will help reinforce Europe’s strategic capabilities under the Critical Raw Materials Act.

Contributing to a Smarter and More Sustainable Mining Future

ISMC’s participation at Raw Materials Week 2025 provided an excellent opportunity to present GAIA-TSF’s progress, strengthen collaboration with sister initiatives, and position the project within the broader European innovation landscape for raw materials.

Through its work, GAIA-TSF continues to support safer, more sustainable, and data-driven mining operations—a crucial step towards a resilient raw materials ecosystem that supports Europe’s long-term environmental and technological goals.
